Blog Assignment #4 - Freedom of Speech in Journalism

An Article by USA TODAY talks about the effects that popular social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter are having on University Athletes. More and more pictures and stories are being found online include one of a 19-year old football player holding cash and a liquor bottle. School administrators have been debating on what to do about Social Network problems with their students. While schools can already track what students do on Campus, it’s hard for them to track what goes on outside of class and have in some cases required the students to add their teachers, administrators and coaches in order to keep a handle on what’s going online.

Even since this article was published, the social networking industry has grown. Facebook and Twitter have become the big two and seem to be taking over the internet. Nearly everyone you come into contact with is on Facebook or is tweeting about their lives. And in the Fall of 2010, Apple Inc. Introduced it’s version of the Social Network, Ping, a Social Network for Music.

Having Control over what goes on during class time makes sense. If students are on Campus taking classes, they should be focused and not posting insensitive material online. However, for administrators and teachers to be required to join the friends list of students in order to keep tabs on them is un called for. What goes on out of school should be kept out of school. It should be up to the student to make a judgement call and not have someone there controlling what they are posting.
